Carrington Crawford, DDS has been a Straine client since the summer of 2012 and serves more than 3,600 patients in Lynchburg, Virginia in an 1,800 square foot facility with six treatment rooms. Dr. Crawford’s points of distinction include advanced training in implant placement, bone grafting and full mouth reconstruction.

Dr. Crawford recalls that when he began working with Straine, his patient demand far exceeded the capacity of his facility, which created a challenge for him and his team on many levels. Dr. Crawford says, “I would come to work and expect everyone to know their job and to do it well – and if they didn’t, I would react instantly. As a leader, my communication skills were not productive and the practice was in a state of chaos. I guess I just didn’t know any better since they don’t teach you how to run the business part of a practice in dental school.”

Kerry Straine responds that Dr. Crawford is far too hard on himself as he has created an exceptionally productive practice at the tender age of 33, attracting over 80 new patients every month.

But Straine’s emphasis on behavior and its role in communication was invaluable to Dr. Crawford and his team. While working on scripting and communication, Straine worked with Dr. Crawford toward doubling the size of his facility, which required designing new operating policies that were beyond any he had ever imagined.

“Since engaging Straine I have learned to communicate more effectively with my staff and have a better understanding of how people gather information and make decisions. I understand now that everyone has different behavioral strengths and limitations and I’m learning to work effectively with each of these behaviors. Different people have different preferences. I’m still a work in progress, but I see a significant improvement in how my staff and I work together now. We have truly become a team.”

The plan for 2014 is to continue developing a mindset of continuous improvement and perfecting the policies that will support a smooth transition from six treatment rooms to 12 in the spring of 2014.

“I am thrilled that we are building a new 5,500 square foot facility,” says Dr. Crawford, “and I’m also continuing to improve my organizational skills as I’m hiring another associate, two hygienists and administrative staff. I’m leaping forward and taking with me the leadership skills I have learned from Straine. As long as Straine Consulting is around,” he adds, “they can count on me being their client.”
