Straine Industry Icon — Thomas Quick, DDS — West Des Moines, IA

A Straine Industry Icon possesses the drive to achieve results, the ability to take initiative, skills in collaboration and teamwork and the ability to lead teams.

Dr. Thomas C. Quick is originally from Storm Lake, Iowa and followed in his father’s (U of Iowa 1959) and sister’s (U of Minnesota 1986) footsteps by earning his dental degree from the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry in 1989. Dr. Quick is a graduate of St. Olaf College and gained three years of additional training as a Lieutenant in the US Navy where he served his first two years at Camp Pendleton, California and his last year at the Naval Training Center in San Diego.  Dr. Quick is also a veteran of the Gulf War and joined Dental Associates of Des Moines in November 1992.

Dr. Quick says of making the decision to engage Straine, “Our Office Manager attended one of Kerry Straine’s seminars in 2013 and she was convinced that he had the education and expertise to take on our group practice. Dental Associates is a long-standing group practice in the West Des Moines area with a great reputation, however, when I first started working with them, each team under the six different owners was operating separately and doing things very differently from each other.”

“There was no unified vision for the practice as a whole,” explains Straine Consultant Sean Feeney, “and it took some time bringing all six of the doctors together to develop mission and vision statements and making sure their values and goals were in alignment. Although these were highly skilled clinicians with very successful practices, they had not taken time to talk about the ‘why’ of their partnership and how they could grow by being more engaged with each other and their employees.”

“We recommended that they begin having team huddles, staff meetings and department manager meetings to create a more unified culture and reinforce the mission and vision to the entire team,” says Sean Feeney. “The teams have become more engaged with each other and more intentional about their purpose as health-care providers.”

Dr. Quick adds, “I had become complacent in my practice doing the technical things that I loved and allowed the managerial and entrepreneurial parts of a successful business go unattended. I’m so grateful that Straine helped me realize what a privilege it is to be in a position of leadership, and consequently, I pushed myself outside of my comfort zone to show more warmth toward each of my employees, to lead more compassionately.  I have literally changed my mindset, from reacting to the challenges that inevitably appear daily, to proactivity, honing my awareness of opportunity each and every day, purposefully guiding everyone to reach their potential.  Work has become so much more enjoyable as I have become more fully engaged and intentional in growing both professionally and personally.”

Dr. Quick continues, “Communication has been key in making progress toward our goals as we commit time now for strategic planning by the doctors on a monthly basis, hold meetings with staff leaders each week and attend daily huddles. We can see the results of these interactions, all of these having increased our effectiveness in such a positive way.  Doctors and staff are having fun and feeling fulfilled!”

“We are evolving into an organization that is system-dependent, not people-dependent, creating and implementing policies that prevent discretionary behavior between teams and helping each of us be accountable to one another. We have coordinated our efforts using technology more effectively to create value-driven, rather than insurance-driven patients, and find that our patients appreciate the orchestration so they can make the best possible decisions for their health.  We are all working smarter instead of harder.  Of course, this is a journey and will require ongoing and continuous effort, however, after four years of life-changing experiences with Kerry Straine, Sean Feeney, Lee Ann Burke and the rest of the Straine Team, I am confident we have the right organization at our side to continue providing the resources and leadership that will enable us to achieve our dream of becoming the most exceptional group practice in the state.”
